Excavation & Trenching Safety + Free Checklist
Excavation and trenching safety refers to the practices and protective systems used to prevent injuries and fatalities in below-grade work. Cave-ins cause an average of 40+ deaths annually and are one of construction's most hazardous activities. OSHA Subpart P (1926.650-652) establishes requirements for safe excavation work.
Excavation vs. Trench
- Excavation: Any man-made cut, cavity, or depression in the earth
- Trench: A narrow excavation (depth greater than width, width <15 feet)
Cave-in Hazards
Soil can weigh 100+ pounds per cubic foot. A trench collapse can bury a worker under thousands of pounds of soil in seconds. Trench walls can collapse without warning, especially in disturbed soil, near vibration, or after rain.
Protective Systems Required at 5 Feet
- Sloping: Cut walls at safe angle based on soil type
- Benching: Create "steps" in excavation walls
- Shoring: Support walls with hydraulic or timber systems
- Shielding: Use trench boxes to protect workers
Competent Person Requirements
OSHA requires a competent person to inspect trenches daily, after rain, and whenever conditions change. This person must be trained to identify hazards, classify soil, and authorize protective systems.
