What Is Fall Protection? + Free Checklist
Fall protection refers to equipment, systems, and procedures designed to prevent workers from falling from elevated work surfaces or, if a fall occurs, to stop the fall before injury. Falls are the leading cause of death in construction, causing over 300 fatalities annually. OSHA requires fall protection at heights of 6 feet or more in construction (1926.501).
When is Fall Protection Required?
- Construction: 6 feet or more above lower level
- General Industry: 4 feet or more
- Shipyards: 5 feet or more
- Longshoring: 8 feet or more
Types of Fall Protection Systems
- Guardrails: Passive protection with top rail, mid rail, and toe board
- Safety Nets: Catch falling workers, installed below work area
- Personal Fall Arrest: Harness, lanyard, and anchor point system
- Positioning Devices: Allow hands-free work while positioned
- Warning Lines: Barrier warning of unprotected edges
- Hole Covers: Secure covers over floor/roof openings
Personal Fall Arrest System Components
- Full Body Harness: Distributes fall forces across body
- Connecting Device: Lanyard or SRL (self-retracting lifeline)
- Anchor Point: Must support 5,000 lbs per worker
