A Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), also called Job Safety Analysis (JSA), is a systematic process for identifying potential hazards associated with each step of a job and determining the best ways to control those hazards. JHAs are proactive safety tools that prevent injuries by analyzing work before it begins.
What is a JHA?
A JHA breaks down a job into individual steps, identifies hazards at each step, and establishes controls to prevent injuries. Unlike reactive safety measures (investigating after an incident), JHAs prevent incidents before they occur.
When to Conduct a JHA
- New jobs or tasks being performed for first time
- Jobs with high injury/illness rates
- Jobs with potential for severe injury
- After an incident or near-miss
- When jobs change or new equipment is introduced
JHA Process Steps
- Select the Job: Prioritize high-risk or new tasks
- Break Down Steps: List sequential steps to complete job
- Identify Hazards: What could go wrong at each step?
- Determine Controls: Eliminate, substitute, engineer, admin, PPE
- Communicate: Train workers on hazards and controls
JHA vs. Risk Assessment
A JHA focuses on specific job tasks and their steps. A risk assessment evaluates broader workplace hazards. Both are important; JHAs are more granular and job-specific.
