Engine Compartment
Inspect all fluid levels, belts, hoses, and engine components before starting the vehicle.

- Are all belts and hoses free of cracks, fraying, or excessive wear?
- Is the power steering fluid at the correct level and free of leaks?
- Are there any visible fuel leaks around the engine or fuel lines?

Cab and Interior
Inspect all controls, safety equipment, and interior components required for safe CMV operation.
- Are all required emergency equipment items present (triangles, fire extinguisher, fuses)?

- Does the horn operate properly?
- Do all mirrors provide clear, unobstructed views with no cracks or damage?
- Is the windshield free of cracks or damage that obstructs the driver's view?
- Does the heater and defroster operate adequately for current weather conditions?
Braking System
Inspect all brake components, air system pressure, and parking brake functionality.
- Does the air pressure build to 90-120 PSI within the required time frame?
- Do the low air pressure warning devices activate at 60 PSI or above?
- Record the air pressure loss rate with engine off and brakes released?
- Are all brake linings and drums free of cracks, contamination, or excessive wear?
- Does the parking brake hold the vehicle stationary on a grade?
Tires and Wheels
Inspect all tires for tread depth, inflation, condition, and wheel hardware.
- Do all steer tires have a minimum tread depth of 4/32 inch?
- Do all other tires (drive, trailer) have a minimum tread depth of 2/32 inch?
- Are all tires free of cuts, bulges, or visible structural damage?
- Are all lug nuts present, properly torqued, and free of rust streaking?
- Are dual tires properly matched in size and free of contact with each other or the vehicle?

Lights and Electrical
Verify all required lighting is functional and meets federal visibility and color requirements.
- Are all headlights (high and low beam) operational and properly aimed?
- Are all turn signals, brake lights, and hazard flashers operational?
- Are all clearance, marker, and identification lights functioning and the correct color?
- Are reflectors clean, undamaged, and properly positioned?
- Is the battery securely mounted and free of corrosion or loose connections?
Coupling Devices and Fifth Wheel
Inspect fifth wheel, kingpin, air and electrical connections between tractor and trailer.
- Is the fifth wheel securely mounted with all fasteners present and tight?
- Is the fifth wheel jaws locked around the kingpin with no horizontal movement?
- Are all air lines (service and emergency) properly connected and free of leaks?
- Is the electrical connector fully seated and the cord free of chafing or damage?
- Is the safety cable or chain properly attached to prevent trailer separation?
Trailer Body and Cargo
Inspect trailer structure, doors, cargo securement, and trailer-specific safety equipment.
- Is the trailer frame and body free of cracks, holes, or structural damage?
- Do all cargo doors open, close, and latch securely?
- Is all cargo properly blocked, braced, tied, or chained per securement regulations?
- Is the trailer tandems pin properly set and locked for current load distribution?
- Are all conspicuity tape strips present and in good reflective condition?
