Accessible Route to Play Area
Verify that a continuous accessible route connects parking, drop-off, and the play area entry.
- Does the accessible route from the nearest parking or drop-off to the play area entry maintain a minimum clear width of 60 inches?
- Is the running slope of the accessible route 1:20 (5%) or less throughout the path to the play area?
- Are all transitions between route surfaces (e.g., concrete to accessible surface) flush or beveled at 1:2 maximum slope?
- Is the route free of protruding objects that reduce clear headroom below 80 inches along the accessible path?
- Are route surfaces stable, firm, and slip-resistant as required for accessible play area entry?
Ground-Level Play Components
Assess whether the required number and type of ground-level accessible play components are present and usable.
- Does the play area provide the minimum required number of ground-level play components for children with disabilities (at least one of each type provided)?
- Do all required accessible ground-level play components have a clear floor space of at least 30 x 48 inches adjacent to them?
- Are accessible ground-level play components connected to the accessible route within the play area without requiring use of inaccessible elements?
- Are the reach ranges on accessible ground-level play components within 15–48 inches (forward reach) or 9–54 inches (side reach)?
- Is a photo documentation of all accessible ground-level play components captured for the record?
Elevated Play Components
Evaluate access to elevated play components via ramps or transfer systems.
- Does the play area provide the minimum number of elevated play components accessible via a ramp or transfer system as required?
- Where a ramp is provided to elevated components, does it comply with a maximum running slope of 1:12 and have handrails on both sides?
- If a transfer system is used instead of a ramp, is the transfer platform at least 11 x 24 inches with a height of 11–18 inches?
- Are transfer steps (if provided) a maximum of 8 inches in height per step with the required grab bars?
- Is the accessible route to all required elevated play components free of barriers or equipment that blocks wheelchair or mobility device access?
Accessible Surfacing
Inspect the play area surfacing material for accessibility compliance and condition.
- Does the accessible surface material within the use zone meet ASTM F1951 standards for accessibility (wheelchair maneuverability)?
- Is the accessible surfacing material currently maintained in a firm and stable condition with no significant displacement or deterioration?
- Are there any gaps in the accessible surfacing greater than 1/2 inch that could impede wheelchair or mobility device movement?
- Is the surface type and current condition documented with photographs?
Signage and Wayfinding
Review accessibility-related signage at the playground and recreation facility.
- Are signs directing users to accessible entrances posted at inaccessible entrances if the accessible entry is not the primary entry?
- Do all permanent room and space signs at the facility include raised characters and Braille in compliance with ADA sign standards?
- Is the International Symbol of Accessibility (ISA) displayed at all accessible parking spaces, routes, and entrances serving the play area?
- Are all posted signs at the play area mounted so that the centerline of sign text is between 60 and 66 inches above the floor?
Accessible Restrooms and Amenities
Check nearby accessible restroom facilities and park amenities for ADA compliance.
- Is at least one accessible restroom facility available within the park or recreation area that serves the play area?
- Does the accessible restroom provide a turning space of at least 60 inches in diameter or a T-shaped space within the toilet room?
- Do accessible drinking fountains (if provided) have spout heights at 36 inches maximum for wheelchair users and a hi-lo unit for standing users?
- Are accessible picnic tables or seating areas (if provided) connected to the accessible route and have adequate knee and toe clearance?
- Is a photo of accessible restroom entrance and accessible amenities captured for compliance documentation?
Accessible Parking and Drop-Off
Inspect accessible parking spaces and passenger loading zones serving the playground.
- Does the parking area serving the playground provide the minimum required number of accessible parking spaces based on total lot size?
- Are accessible parking spaces marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility on both the pavement and a vertical sign at least 60 inches above the ground?
- Do accessible parking access aisles meet the minimum width of 60 inches (96 inches for van spaces)?
- Is the slope of accessible parking spaces and access aisles 1:48 (2%) or less in all directions?
