Scaffolding Safety Guide + Free Checklist
Scaffolding safety encompasses the proper design, erection, inspection, and use of temporary elevated work platforms. Scaffold-related incidents cause approximately 60 deaths and 4,500 injuries annually. OSHA Subpart L (1926.450-454) establishes comprehensive scaffolding requirements for construction.
Types of Scaffolding
- Supported Scaffolds: Frame, tube and coupler, systems scaffolding
- Suspended Scaffolds: Swing stages, multi-point platforms
- Rolling Scaffolds: Mobile platforms with casters
- Aerial Lifts: Scissor lifts, boom lifts (separate OSHA rules)
Key OSHA Requirements
- Capacity: Must support 4x intended load
- Planking: Scaffold grade planks, fully decked
- Guardrails: Required at 10+ feet, top rail 38-45 inches
- Access: Proper ladders or stair towers
- Foundation: Firm, level base with base plates and mudsills
Competent Person Requirements
A competent person must supervise erection/dismantling, inspect scaffolds before each shift, and train workers. Only trained workers may erect or dismantle scaffolding.
